What is Tulips on Troost's mission?

When and how did Tulips on Troost get started?
Durwin Rice founded the Tulips on Troost project in 2006. A few years before, he had returned to Kansas City after living in New York and was struck by the racial divisions and blight that existed in such a historical part of the city. This realization led to Tulips on Troost.

What is Troost Avenue named after?
Dr. Benoist Troost, a dutchman who was one of Kansas City's founders and the city's first physician.

Why tulips?
In honor of Dr. Troost, who came to Kansas City from Holland, the world headquarters of tulips.

How many tulips have been planted so far?
About a quarter of a million, however by the next few seasons many of those may no longer come up--that's why we need your help to keep planting in order to reach our goal of one million tulips blooming in 2011.

What happens after you reach a million tulips?
We'll keep going! If we can reach three million tulips blooming, then we'll become an international tulip festival and people from all over the world will travel to Troost Avenue, boosting the area's economic development.
