Tulips on Troost

An Initiative for change

  • Tulips on Troost aims to change the face of Troost Avenue by planting one million tulips along the Avenue in honor of an early Kansas City leader, Dr. Benoist Troost. Through this mission, we hope to inspire and motivate the citizens of Kansas City to recognize the value of neighborhood capital improvements and beautification in some of the city's most under-served neighborhoods. Tulips are just on the surface—our deep-rooted goal is to use a beautiful, accessible thing like a tulip to represent positive change on Troost and to let the city know that Troost is worth our time, efforts, and resources.

Tulips on Troost has been doing a lot of digging on Troost Avenue leading to some surprising discoveries.

First, we learned that the curbside planting of tulips is not only feasible but turns out to be a total, gorgeous, fantastic success! So, never mind the pundits who told us the severities of snow, salt and urban monoxide were going to be the doom of our Darwin hybrids. Instead, in Spring of 2007 (after our first season of frantic bulb burying) we saw over 70,000 tulips blooming nothing short of triumphantly along 10 miles of Troost Avenue.

And, that's not all that's buried along Troost Avenue.

In our ongoing search for potential tulip gardens we recently discovered the Forest Hill Cemetary where the list of Who Was Who in Kansas City includes such familiar names as Bartle, Crittenden, Greenlease, Hall, Kemper, Pendergast and Pierson among others. (There's good reason these memorial grounds are on all the local history tours.) But even more fun was our discovery of the final resting places for baseball greats Satchel Paige, Rip Ragan, Buck O'Neil and Zack Wheat.

Already we're cultivating the tulip cultivars so that one day we can proudly plant our own (among others) Satchel Paige and Rip Ragan tulips (both, of course, crimson Monarch and Cincinnati reds).

It's just one of the fun ideas we have about how you can participate in the tulip takeover of Troost Avenue.

We've got ideas for school curriculum, tool drives, bake sales, art shows and symphonies on the street among a slew of other fun events that you'll kick yourself for not attending!

More, of course, has ALWAYS been more and so, you are invited to join us at the 2nd Annual Tulips on Troost Stakeholders' Meeting where you will discover your own passion for the future of Troost Avenue and her first million tulips.
