Tulips on Troost

An Initiative for change

  • Tulips on Troost aims to change the face of Troost Avenue by planting one million tulips along the Avenue in honor of an early Kansas City leader, Dr. Benoist Troost. Through this mission, we hope to inspire and motivate the citizens of Kansas City to recognize the value of neighborhood capital improvements and beautification in some of the city's most under-served neighborhoods. Tulips are just on the surface—our deep-rooted goal is to use a beautiful, accessible thing like a tulip to represent positive change on Troost and to let the city know that Troost is worth our time, efforts, and resources.

Worried about parking downtown? Take a look at the parking in Amsterdam.

It's always fun to find somebody in town who's excited about doing something good for our city and its residents. So, today we were very glad to discover this young achiever and the 816 Bicycle Collective (still in its infancy) sprouting on Troost Avenue.

His MySpace page tells you a bit of what the Bicycle Collective is about:

1) To gather and repair bicycles that would otherwise be disposed of, disregarded or destroyed;
2) To distribute these bicycles to those who need them in exchange for donated time, resources or revenue – dependent on each individuals needs and means;
3) To increase the amount of people who ride bikes and time spent riding;
4) To educate the various communities in Kansas City about bicycles and the potential solutions to related social and environmental issues;
5) To empower individuals by providing the education, materials and skills that facilitate self reliant transportation;
6) To foster a sense of respect and community among participants that will extend to the greater Kansas City communities.

Volunteers meet every Saturday from 3PM to dusk at 3109 Troost Avenue (enter from 31st Street).

We think that the 816 Bicycle Collective has found its perfect home on Troost Avenue and will do all we can to help! Please stop by on Saturdays and find out how you can joint the effort.

As always (from the Tulip Cafe's perspective) it's easy to find a Dutch example of a more evolved culture and its relationship to bicycles and tulips.
